Dauphin County is definitely a nice area. We live in Southern Chester County, less than 20 miles from MD and even closer to DE. All mushroom farms and the like around here, but a pleasant place to live all the same. Leila, and just about everyone else, complains about the smell of the mushroom farms. I, on the other hand, have grown used to, if not fond of, the scent, not to mention the overall lack of population. Plenty of people, but spread out, you know? I've never been to Florida, but I don't see any reason to venture there. Hot weather is my mortal foe...
These look like great project machines. Slightly off topic - I have the exact same Olympia SM9 robot typeface. It is a lot of fun.
I spent typewriter day at the Kansas City Maker Faire. This is the second year and it has more than doubled in size. One maker had an IBM Selectric II he had converted into a printer with solenoids and cables. I will blog it at some point in the near future after several previously scheduled posts go live. On the way home, I stopped at an antique mall in search of a coffee table. I found a Barr Universal in the wild at a decent price. It needs work, but it is a worthy project.
Not only does the SM9 have a neat typeface, but it is the best working 'as found' typewriter I have purchased. Everything is phenomenal, and it is quite the snappy typer. I don't think I have the heart to replace my Underwood Champion portable as my 'every day' machine, but if I did, this would be it! I would love to see that Selectric. That sounds like an awesome conversion, and is definitely noteworthy. Oh, the things you find. Speaking of that...a wild Barr Universal? My good man, that is amazing! I remember the one time I walked up on a pristine Sholes Visible at a flea market that the seller could not hand over to me quick enough. Then, of course, I woke up and cursed my vivid dreams. What a great find...
Thanks for the heads up, Richard. This machine is another in a long line of restoration projects, so as soon as I get it up and running, I will report how the counter works. I hope it is a word counter, as you said. What a neat little add on...
The Junior is definitely a looker! I was very curious about that counter, good thing Richard Wan Kenobi clarified what it is. Wow, a word counter, never knew it even existed.
It's cute, right? I love the curvy little portables. Would be nicer with a smooth finish, rather than the crackle paint, but you get what you get. That damned mechanism is giving me the run around, though, so I am not sure when it will be fully functional. Everything works great, the carriage just does not ride right.
Sounds like an adventurous Typewriter Day! I believed the red thing to be a word counter as well - probably perfect for any NaNoWriMo writer! (I think someone even posted an ad for one of these last november!)

Hey, that looks like a word counter on the Underwood! It should be activated by the spacebar. Very rare!
